Description:

The Institute resembles a Heian period aristocrat’s home.  It houses an auditorium and library, as well as meeting and exhibit space.  The surrounding garden is in the stroll and pond style with ishi-dōrō 石灯籠 stone lanterns and ishi-bachi 石橋 stone bridge  The Institute offers tours by reservation only March through May and October 30 through December 12. It is especially popular in early April when the cherry trees are in bloom.

Contributed by Antonio Viglietto:

The garden at the Japan Cultural Institute of Rome has been designed by Ken Nakajima and built in 1962. It is the first Japanese garden built in Europe designed by a Japanese.  It is a pond garden (sen’en) and includes a waterfall, a pond, small islands, rocks around the pond, a concrete bridge and a stone lantern.  Among the trees there are cherry, wisteria, iris, pines and also olive trees (which are quite present in the Mediterranean area), to symbolize the friendship between Italy and Japan.
